It's very simple why women don't like her as much as men. Women saw through Sarah Palin and we saw through her quickly. Men are literal and are more likely to say what they mean and mean what they say. Women are more nuanced and better able to persuade and manipulate others with their words. So it's quite natural for us to be able to look below the surface of another woman's words and grasp the intentions behind them.
Sarah Palin is the peppy cheerleader in high school all the boys thought was so sweet but the girls knew was really a vicious shrew. She's the new girl in the office who wears tight shirts and three-inch heels, is super-friendly to her male superiors, ignores the other women, and gets promoted sooner than her more capable and hard working peers. She's the outgoing PTA mom all of the other women are scared to cross because they will find themselves put on the worst committees. Only a woman knows how to give another woman a sweet smile and at the same time cut her down to size with an artfully crafted "compliment" without male observers having a clue about what just happened. It's like a dog whistle.
After her convention speech that so many pundits raved about, I talked to a few of my Republican girlfriends and they all disliked her immediately, telling me things like, "she's mean", "who does she think she is putting Obama down like that" and "I just don't like her". And these were women who, all except one, ended up voting for McCain anyway, although much less enthusiastically than they would have before his VP pick. The one who switched her vote to Obama did so solely because of Sarah Palin. It wasn't really the attack lines the McCain camp gave her to deliver that had turned my friends off. It was the relish with which she delivered them.
The Republican women I know who love Palin are a great deal like her--simplistic thinkers who are always feeling victimized themselves. I have a feeling that if the McCain camp had spent more than a weekend checking Palin out, a woman on his staff (my money would be on Nicole Wallace) would have figured out what kind of person she was and none of us would know her name right now.
I'm going to ask my wife if she thinks that the foregoing opinions are spot-on.
Okay, you didn't ask me... but I'm not bashful...
I was berated, and soundly, while working for the election of Barack Obama, by my colleagues when I said, after the appearance of Palin at the Republican Convention.."Wow, did you see the extra prime t-bone that McCain picked to enliven his moribund campaign? What a gorgeous, dopey woman!!:
"Gorgeous!! What are you TALKING about!! And I can't BELIEVE you said that!! I think she's UGLY!! And she sounds so STUPID!! Do you think her looks matter?..." (As if serious standards were a consideration in American politics..). "Isn't it MORE important that she's STUPID."
Well, yeah,,, it is.. more important that she's stupid...or at least it certainly should be... and I didn't say it shouldn't.
I said that Sarah Palin, was, and IS.. fabulous looking... And not only that .. it is not a elite kind of beauty, neither Hollywood, not high fahsion.
Sarah is ROBUST!! Fleshy!! With breasts and thighs,,, and they look real, as does she... no intimations of surgery or botox,..... She could be your relative if your relatives were good lucking and full of sexual charisma.
Sure she's stupid... and she says stupid things.. but they don't tax you... they don't make you feel that you HAVE to know anything about Russian history or foreign policy. If a candidate for President doesn' t know and doesn't care enough to find out, why should it matter to you?
Ronald Reagan was stupid, and too many Americans forget the horrors of his administration and remember him as the guy who like Superman, single handedly brought down the Berlin Wall.
And all ten of the last batch of Republican candidates for President were stupid,,
Eight of them don't believe that Darwinian theory are worth teaching your children about, for god's sake..
And Jesus!! does anyone need to be reminded of eight years of a blatantly and dangerously ignorant buffoon, George W. Bush, leading the nation down the garden path to implosion?
Intellect doesn't really pull much weight in American politics... the rejection of Adlai Stevenson, not once but twice, and decisively at a time when his intellect and sophistication might possibly have saved us from the quagmire of the Vietnam war, is a prime example of that...
And C-Span, bless it doesn't let us forget for a minute that the level of Congressional debate on so many issues, currently the Health Care bills, is so low and so devoid of substance as to be ludicrous.
So back to the beauteous Ms Palin... she of the larger than life head and body, and rather stupendous legs, the sparkling eyes, the fabulous cheek bones, and the Neanderthal brain..... the handsome family, with something for everyone, Second Amendment zealots, anti abortion rights maniacs, back to law of the jungle advocates, and what even those who live in them refer to as "trailer trash.."
They will extol her right up to the polling booth... but what they will do once they are inside is anybody's guess.
She is too good looking for women to abide, and too domineering for most men to tolerate.... most men don't envision standing a few feet behind their wives on a platform while she is being applauded and cheered on for her garbled speech, as a particularly fitting end to male domination of American politics.
Even Bill Clinton, the first Black and actually hermaphroditic President... didn't like it at all....and still doesn't.
But the bottom line, Andrew Sullivan's girl friends' insights aside, is that if the American economy continues to slide, particularly if the rich keep getting richer while the poor have more children, no jobs, inadequate health care, and become increasingly aware that are wars are disastrous in every conceivable way,, AND their religious leaders egg them on, then she or some other charlatan (Ms Buchman of Minnesota? ) could be swept into office on the basis of their femininity.... or good teeth,.... or just our national desperation.
