  1. Hi Julia, I am what some would call “alt right” politically. I do listen to many sources representing competing world views and am curious about every one’s world view. What life experiences and other influences and information brought them to their current world views as to their political, religious, moral and other issues. I am what many on the left would abhor – GASP – a Trump supporter.

My reason for writing this email; I was listening to public radio and heard you being interviewed and recognized that you were expressing and advancing some of the ideas and concepts I have encourage others to embrace. I didn’t know who you are until I googled your name. Your profile as a celebrity with SNL came up. I wasn’t sure the person I heard on the radio was the same person so included with name “older and wider” bit and confirmed it was you.

I have been trying to get a dialogue going with between myself and anyone who thinks I am wrong and willing and able to enlighten me if I am. I’m not afraid of being wrong but expect others to give me time and space to digest their information and logic to determine its importance and significance. In other words, time to absorb information and change my mind! After all, as fellow truth seekers we are after the same thing. Nothing shameful about being wrong, just about not caring enough to find the truth of things that are. The world has become a very confusing place and it requires a concerted effort to try and make sense of it all. I feel it is an opportunity and responsibility to attempt to make sense of the world we live in so we can be good stewards of it. I like quotes and one I quote often is “in the information age ignorance is a choice”. One of mine ” Americans are generally over-entertained and under informed”. How arrogant I am to quote myself!

I believe that laying some ground rules for a discussion between people of differing views in imperative to a positive outcome. It is perhaps as important if not more important to be nice as it is to be right. I also believe it is important for people of differing world views to first discover their common interests and listen to understand each other. I have been censored many times in various -on line- discussions. I have always made it a point to use respect and not talk down to or be rude to others. There is too much censorship “on line” and in life. I have done more research than the average person to understand important aspects of history as well as current issues and come to the table prepared to learn and inform. I have collected considerable information and original source documentation and am prepared to offer what I believe to be sound reasons for believing the way I do.

I don’t know what I hoped to accomplish by sending this email to you but I guess it is to say it is nice to hear someone from a different political persuasion share and express an appreciation for some of the same truths that I embrace.

I am a 63 year old roof repair and maintenance contractor who hasn’t had any real success in life by most peoples yard sticks. I have been married for 36 years to the same woman and have five children. I was a devout Mormon who served a 2 yr mission but studied my way out of it. Truth is not so negotiable as the Mormons try to make it! I write melodies and play guitart and love the outdoors. Respond if you like.

    1. Hello Dave! Thanks for writing. I think you must have been listening to a Public Radio interview I just did with Bill Radke, maybe? I don’t know. I’m curious what I was saying that you agreed with. Maybe about being able to disagree openly and with respect? Or just finding disagreeing with ideas, and being open to change, interesting in itself? I’m guessing. I remember us talking about that. Anyway, wow – a Trump supporter. That’s a hard one for me. I find it hard to articulate all the ways I find him reprehensible, I actually get tongue-tied sometimes. Maybe sputtering is more like it. Anyway, I applaud you for writing to me! Also, I love that you were Mormon, now that is one fascinating religion. I have a lot of experience with Mormons who are friends. It’s a compelling regional story that I find people on the East Coast fully unknowledgable about. I love that you have 5 children and that you do old roof repair. (You do know that Trump would stiff you for any repairs, right? Ha.) You sound like a real success to me, and I love that you play guitar. I will answer if you write me.
